Small Striped Raffia Basket in Jelly Beans Pattern.

These raffia outer and straw lining baskets come with leather handles and corners. Their inside skirt has a drawstring which closes the basket. This is a very strong and light weight basket that can get wet and be hosed when needing a clean. The small size are terrific to use as a handbag or to carry a small amount of shopping. They are perfect to carry lunches to work instead of using a plastic bag.

Measures 24cm x 24cm x 15cm.  Handle drop 20cm to top of basket.
These is an average sizes as the baskets are handmade and sizes can vary slightly.

Raffia is native to Madagascar and a sustainable resource to the country. Collectors go deep in the island to harvest the raffia fibre of the raffia palm tree, which grows in tropical regions of Madagascar. Each palm branch is made of nearly 100 leaflets, which are sustainably removed from the palms yielding long continuous fibres that are then dried before using.

Raffia strands have a natural resin, making them not only soft and smooth but just as resilient and strong. 

With a population of over 28 million citizens, Madagascar’s raffia industry employs over 2 million.
